Core ABS Mechanics
If ABS feels intrusive or inconsistent, you can adjust it:
- Challenge Allotment: Each team starts with two challenges per game.
- Success Penalty: If your challenge is successful (call overturned), you keep it; if unsuccessful (call stands), you lose one.
- Extra Innings: Teams with no remaining challenges get one extra challenge at the start of each extra inning.
- Availability: The ABS system is not present in online modes like Diamond Dynasty or H2H, where umpire calls are set to “Perfect.”
- Prioritize High-Leverage Situations
Save challenges for pivotal counts, like 3-2 or with bases loaded. Overturning a strikeout or a critical ball call in these moments can drastically swing run expectancy and momentum.
- Watch Pitch Movement
High-velocity pitches with lots of movement—like sinkers or sliders—are tough for umpires to judge, especially at the bottom of the zone. If a pitch barely nicks the zone but is called a ball, that’s a prime candidate for a challenge.
- Ignore the Dugout
Unlike real-life replay systems, you only have about two seconds to initiate a challenge. Don’t wait for advice from the dugout or replays—you must trust your own read.
- Understand the “Sliver” Rule
ABS considers a pitch a strike if any part of the ball touches the strike zone. If you see even a slight overlap with the zone in the replay, avoid challenging—it’s likely to fail.
- Leverage Hitter-Specific Zones
The ABS strike zone adapts to each batter’s height. Taller batters have a higher bottom-zone threshold, so you can be more aggressive challenging low-ball calls, whereas shorter batters may need more conservative timing.
