Tourist Shopping in Cape Town—Claiming at the Airport? - lofew - 04-21-2026

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine is currently visiting the beautiful Western Cape and they have been on a bit of a shopping spree for local leather goods. They are worried that they might miss out on their tax recovery because they lost one of their original paper receipts.

I told them I’d check the latest rules to see if digital copies or bank statements are accepted at the customs desk. It would be a shame to lose that money over a piece of paper! What is the current status of a vat refund in south africa

Thanks in advance.

I faced a similar issue while traveling and shopping, and from what I learned, original receipts are usually required for a VAT refund in South Africa, though some places may accept digital proof with proper details. It’s best to confirm at the airport desk early. At the same time, managing travel and studies was hard for me, so I looked for ways like take my WGU test just to balance things better, and it helped me stay focused on both learning and personal plans.
