How to Create a Strong Password and Manage Passwords Securely - Omoseye Alebiosu - 06-26-2024

Here's a guide on creating strong passwords and managing them securely:
Creating Strong Passwords:
  • Length is Key: Use longer passwords, ideally 12 characters or more. Longer passwords are exponentially more difficult to crack.
  • Mix it Up: Combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols (@, #, $, etc.) in your password. This creates a complex combination that resists various hacking methods.
  • Avoid Personal Information: Don't use easily guessable information like your name, birthday, address, or pet's name. Hackers can often find this information through social media or other online sources.
  • Ditch the Dictionary: Avoid using dictionary words or common phrases. Hackers can use automated tools to try these combinations easily.
  • Make it Unique: Don't reuse the same password for multiple accounts. If one account gets compromised, hackers might try the same password on your other accounts.
Strong Password Examples:
These are examples (but don't use them as your actual passwords!):
  • Tr!ple#Secur!ty (includes uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols)
  • MyV@c@tion202X (uses a mix of characters and incorporates a misspelling)
  • Compu7er.Guru (combines a relevant word with a special character and extension)
Secure Password Management:
  • Password Managers: Consider using a password manager. These applications store your passwords securely using strong encryption and often generate random, complex passwords for you.
  • Master Password: If you use a password manager, choose a single, very strong master password to access all your other passwords. This master password is crucial, so make it memorable and unique.
  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification code (usually sent to your phone) in addition to your password when logging in.
  • Avoid Password Sharing: Don't share your passwords with anyone, not even close friends or family.
Additional Tips:
  • Phishing Awareness: Be cautious of phishing emails or websites that try to trick you into revealing your password. Never enter your password on a website unless you're absolutely sure it's legitimate.
  • Regular Password Updates: Consider changing your passwords periodically, especially for critical accounts like email and banking.
By following these guidelines, you can create strong, unique passwords and manage them securely. Remember, password security is an ongoing process, so stay vigilant and keep your passwords safe!

I came across this older discussion and wanted to add that using passphrases made of random words has helped me a lot. They’re long, easy to remember, and still strong. Something like mixing unrelated words with a symbol or two works well. Curious if anyone here has tried switching from classic complex passwords to passphrases and noticed any difference in security or ease of use?

I’ve found that mixing long, complex passwords with a decent manager works best for me, and using a free password generator makes the whole process way less of a headache. I’ll spin up a batch of strong logins there, drop them into my manager, and pair everything with 2FA. It saves time and keeps my accounts locked down without me having to remember every weird combo.
